EL PERRO DEL MAR, LYKKE LI, ANNA TERNHEIM El Rey Theater Control Group Website
On Monday night, Dave and I had the opportunity to check out El Perro Del Mar and Lykke Li at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles. It turned out to be a very pleasant experience for both of us. We got in about a half hour before the show started and had the chance to notice the upgrades that's been done to the venue.

In addition to El Perro del Mar and Lykke Li, singer and songwriter, Anna Ternheim was also on the bill and she opened the show. Accompanied with her acoustic guitar, keyboard and pre-recorded drum tracks, in which she referred as a "low-budget tour", Anna performed a seven-song set. A wonderfully haunting set with lyrics that will tear anyone's tender heart to pieces straight from her album Halfway to Fivepoints. As she ended her cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Little Lies", some bolts in my brain got stuck in that moment and forced me to listen to it again several times this week.

For Dave and I, tho, we agreed that Lykke Li was the highlight of our night. She opened her show by playing a toy grand piano and singing her lullaby-like number, "Time Flies". From then on, she delivered an energetic, playful and simply impressive dance set. The set progression worked so well and while it wasn't chaotic and pretentious, she dominated the stage, singing, dancing, interacting with audience and banging on the cymbal. I was happy to hear a live version of songs like "Dance, Dance, Dance" and "Little Bit". I'm favoring the live tracks now to the recording as the performance added so much more flare to the songs. A guest appearance by El Perro del Mar during her set was simply an icing on the cake.

El Perro Del Mar was a great act to mellow out the night. Singing songs from her new album, From the Valley to the Stars, as well as her self-titled album, she started her set solo and later brought her complete band on stage. A serene, much toned down set to that of Lykke Li's, she carried the night out through her unique, charming voice, singing her 60's inspired ballads. There were a couple of upbeat numbers during the set, such as "I Can't Talk About It", yet it seemed to me the gloom that's set on her lyrics couldn't quite escape. It's the kind of mood so genuine I can't help but wonder why the sadness?

Early on during the show, Anna Ternheim referred to their tour as the "Swedish Music Taking Over The World Tour", and I couldn't agree with her more. Everyone on the bill is an amazing singer, songwriter and performer. They all have got some of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard/seen live. We were happy to have caught them on their last night of the tour. I must also say that I rarely enjoy a show thoroughly from the opening act to the last, and this show was certainly one of the few.
